Vision Correction : Phakic IOL

Similar to the Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) used in cataract surgery, Phakic IOLs are implanted within the eye as vision correction devices. Phakic IOLs are used to correct common refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness).
Phakic IOLs correct refractive errors in much the same way contact lenses do, but they are implanted within the eye, in front of the eye’s natural crystalline lens. This is a wonderful vision correction option for people who want freedom from traditional contact lenses, but are unable to get LASIK.

Implanting the Phakic IOL is very similar to cataract surgery, except the natural crystalline lens is not removed during a Phakic IOL procedure. For many people, the Phakic IOL provides the permanent vision correction they are looking for, without laser vision correction.
The Phakic IOL procedure is performed under local anesthetics. Prior to the procedure, your ophthalmologist will numb your eye with anesthetic drops. Then, a device will be used to hold your eyelids open and the ophthalmologist will make a tiny incision in the eye and implant the Phakic IOL behind the iris, in front of the crystalline lens.
After the Phakic IOL has been implanted, the incision is closed, and often times, vision is instantly better. You will be asked to were a protective patch and rest for a minimum of one day. You will also need to have a follow up visit the following day to make sure there are no complications.
