IntraLase FAQs

In Burbank, Sherman Oaks, San Marino, and Greater Los Angeles, California

What is recovery like from IntraLase?
It’s similar to recovery from traditional LASIK. Improvement in vision is pretty much immediate. Whether the tiny flap has been made by a microkeratome, as in traditional LASIK, or by an IntraLase laser, it heals quickly.

Is IntraLase safer?
There’s some discussion on this. It’s generally thought to be safer because it’s computer-guided rather than hand-guided. This gives it a guaranteed precision for the flap thickness, which is an important factor in the success of the procedure. IntraLase flaps have a consistent thickness because the laser’s accuracy is so high (+/- 10 microns).

On the hand, so to speak, a surgeon’s hand is very precise, highly trained, and if you’ve chosen your eye surgeon well, very familiar with LASIK surgery. And microkeratomes are sophisticated surgical instruments.

Until IntraLase has been used for more years, and a definitive conclusion can be reached, there’ll continue to be discussion on this topic.

Is IntraLase the same as Custom LASIK?
No. Custom LASIK refers to wavefront technology, which is used for diagnosis. With this technology, light waves are sent to the person’s eye; they bounce back from the cornea and a 3-D map is made from their information, by the computer software. This becomes the basis for subsequent cornea correction.

What are the advantages of IntraLase?

  • Studies done so far suggest that more patients achieve 20/20 vision with IntraLase.
  • When patients have had one eye done with a microkeratome and one with IntraLase, they have given a preference for the post-op vision of the IntraLase eye by 3:1 over the microkeratome eye.
  • There’s reduced incidence of post-op dry eye symptoms
  • Overall, fewer follow-up enhancements have been needed

But in considering these points, one must remember that IntraLase has not been in use for many years, so there hasn't been time yet for any definitive studies.

How do I know if I could have an IntraLase procedure?
If you were not able to have traditional LASIK because of the shape or thickness of your cornea, you might be able to have an IntraLase procedure.

The IntraLase laser is so precise that it can make a corneal flap even if your corneas were considered too thin, steep, flat, or irregular for traditional LASIK.
