Custom LASIK FAQs
In Burbank, Sherman Oaks, San Marino, and Greater Los Angeles, California
1. What is the CustomVue System?
It's a combination of technologies which both diagnoses vision problems and uses an Excimer laser to correct them.
Wavefront technology is part of it, which is a breakthrough in customized vision assessment. The Wavefront device sends a ray of light into your eye, which is reflected back by your retina into the device again. Coming back from your retina, it must pass through the eyeball and out through the pupil.
This causes the returning light ray to have characteristics unique to your eye - diagnostic information that was unavailable previously. The Wavefront technology displays this information as a 3-D map, which your eye surgeon uses as the basis for subsequent laser correction.
2. What are lower and higher order aberrations?
These terms are part of the vision industry language and refer to two types of vision problems. Lower order aberrations are:
- Nearsightedness
- Farsightedness
- Astigmatism
These 3 problems are correctable by traditional LASIK surgery.
Higher order aberrations are:
- Halos around lights
- Ghosting (double vision)
- Reduced contrast sensitivity
- Starbursts
These are not correctable by traditional LASIK, but can be corrected by CustomVue LASIK.
3. What is the CustomVue procedure like?
First there's an examination and interview, to see if you'd be a good candidate. If it's decided you would be, you'll be given instructions on how to prepare.
When the day comes
- You're seated in a reclining chair
- Anesthetic drops are put into your eyes
- A thin little flap is created in the cornea, as for traditional LASIK
- Your treatment information is transferred digitally from the WaveScan device to the VISXÒ laser and the laser treatment takes a few seconds
- There's no pain
- You'll notice vision improvement right away, and improvement will continue for several days
4. What is the recovery period like?
You can probably return to work the following day.
- Your eyes may be itchy and watery at first, and sleep is a good remedy
- For about 2 weeks, use no eye makeup and avoid dusty environments
- There'll be a follow-up appointment the next day, and again after about a week
- There might also be follow-ups after a month and after 3 months.
- Typically, your vision will be stabilized within that 3 month period
5. Can I have both eyes done at once?
Yes, most people choose that. But you can also have one eye done at a time.
6. Will I need glasses or contact lenses afterwards?
Probably not. Results vary of course, but most people achieve 20/20 vision. Presbyopia continues however, since it's a result of aging and unrelated to the cornea. It's a diminished ability to focus and can't be treated by laser correction. So depending on your age you may still need reading glasses, but probably not bifocals.
7. How do I know whether I'm a good candidate?
You need to schedule an appointment with a qualified LASIK surgeon. Usually it will be free of charge. The surgeon will assess your vision and its problems and explain why or why not it might be the best treatment for you.
