Custom Ablation: Fixing Astigmatism

In Burbank, Sherman Oaks, San Marino, and Greater Los Angeles, California

Astigmatism is caused by uneven curvatures on the cornea.  When the cornea is steeper in some areas and flatter in others, light focuses at several points on the retina and causes distorted vision at any distance. The condition of astigmatism often accompanies nearsightedness and farsightedness.

LASIK corrects the condition of astigmatism by adjusting the corneal surface to an even, consistent shape that correctly focuses light on the retina.  Flatter corneal areas are effectively steepened and steeper areas are flattened with painless laser light, and a successful procedure allows patients to effectively view near and far objects.

How is Natural Vision Created?
When the eye is open, light first passes through the cornea, the eye's transparent outer window. The cornea then directs the light through the pupil, a round opening in the iris or colored part of the eye. Directly behind the pupil is the eye's natural lens, which fine-focuses the light directly onto the retina in the back of the eye. The retina then changes the light into electrical impulses and sends them through the optic nerve to the brain, where vision is interpreted.
